New recycling laws are on their way in March and all schools in England must comply with these regulations, but don’t worry, Crescent Purchasing Consortium and LUPC's Waste Management procurement framework can assist you with this.
From 31st March 2025, ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation will come into effect that will change the way businesses in England are required to recycle their waste. The changes mean businesses will be required to separate “recycling relevant waste”, including dry recyclables and food waste, from general waste, on-site, prior to collection.
Institutions are advised that failure to comply with the incoming 'Simpler Recycling' laws after March could lead to hefty fines.
To help our members prepare for the changes, we wanted to highlight the current Waste Management framework we offer in partnership with the London Universities Purchasing Consortium, which can give access to a wide range of suppliers in support of your education institution's waste management needs. Providing sustainable waste management services to deliver an efficient and compliant route to market, this purchasing framework is comprised of five lots, covering the following areas:
• Lot 1 - Total waste management
• Lot 2 - General and recycling waste services
• Lot 3 - Hazardous, chemical and radioactive waste
• Lot 4 - Clinical and pharmaceutical waste
• Lot 5 - Confidential waste
With the new regulations coming into force this spring, 'Simpler Recycling' is currently a hot topic in English education, with the Department for Education's Buying for schools team recently publishing a blog on the matter to highlight the changes afoot and the action schools and trusts will need to take in order to be compliant.
