Acquiring library resources has never been more challenging for colleges. User expectations for instant access to core materials have increased, while college libraries attempt to build collections in an increasingly diverse range of subject areas and educational levels. The challenges grow whilst budgets and staffing levels to deliver the resources needed to provide an outstanding educational experience are constantly under pressure. Some of the issues raised during recent meetings also have a cascading effect.
The need for more shared study spaces increases the need for e-books rather than print to save space. Yet the relatively high cost of electronic titles vs print makes this hard to achieve.
Smaller teams and lower staffing numbers in general means that more college libraries are having to look at “shelf-ready” supplies, which in turn increases the cost of titles.
In light of these difficult conditions, Crescent Purchasing Consortium continues to work hard to ensure that members receive the best possible deals on both print and electronic resources encouraging suppliers to increase discounts and waive hosting fees wherever possible. In addition to additional discounts we have asked suppliers to look at innovative ways in which libraries and suppliers can work together to make the most of their budgets and still improve the offering to students. We know that this is no small feat but we are sure that with innovation and fresh thinking all of our members will be able to benefit.
