Manga workshop brings character to holidays

Diversifying CPC's approach to Giving Back to young people, our registered charity was happy to fund a three-hour manga workshop opportunity in Gloucester this August, offering its learners an authentic taste of the distinctive Japanese artform.

Held at Gloucester's GL1 venue, the workshop formed part of the new Comics Assemble! convention on Saturday 15th August.

Described as "a democratic celebration of comics by creators", the one-day convention brought together comic writers, artists and enthusiasts alike, with advertised guests from a host of major projects, encompassing Marvel, DC Comics and many more.

Preceding the event's scheduled Conan discussion with writer Jim Zub and artist Jesus Merino and subsequent interview with cover artist and colourist Sabine Rich, our Giving Back funded manga workshop helped this newfound festival for the collector community establish a busy event schedule, while offering a fun and fruitful few hours to some of the venue's younger visitors.

CPC funds allowed up to 25 children to try their hand at Making Manga, with the three-hour workshop led by Chie Kutsuwada, an illustrator who has produced work for the BBC, Channel 4, CNN and Japanese embassies, as well as a regular and full-colour illustrated column series for Mainichi Weekly (a bilingual sister title to Mainichi Shimbum, Japan's oldest daily newspaper). 📰

Our signature Giving Back initiative launched in 2019 and since then has allocated £2.7m in organisation funding to education sector purchases, projects and events. The programme's present focus is on supporting SEND learners, enhancing physical and mental wellbeing and tackling the causes of absenteeism in education, issues that we determined can often overlap in nature.

CPC plans to fund and support a similar workshop event next summer, so be sure to share any news with parents and the relative people within your organisation, ensuring your artists of the future don’t miss out on a fantastic, free opportunity.
