Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan and football industry professional David Horrocks are teaming up to offer 'Inside Professional Sports' sessions to our institutions this academic year.
The events will be facilitated by Davies Sport, one of the suppliers on CPC’s Sports, Fitness & Play Equipment framework.
This updated, re-tendered agreement, which went live in May was previously featured in Issue 110 of the CPC Newsletter.
With a wealth of specialist sporting expertise in tow, the 'Inside Professional Sports' sessions offer the potential to provide students with invaluable insight into the variety of career paths offered by the professional sports industry, off the field and/or behind the scenes.
An accomplished figure with a senior career that saw him play around 500 games, including more than 100 for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, Mike Phelan won championship medals in all three of England’s top divisions, as well as FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners Cup silverware with the Reds.
At the end of his playing career, Mike would turn his talents to coaching and he would serve as United’s assistant manager under both Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, helping the club reach two Champions League finals and coaching world class footballers from Wayne Rooney to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Meanwhile, a former Head of Research and Development, David Horrocks formed part of the senior management team at Old Trafford, spending three years travelling far and wide on the Premier League club’s behalf, with the aim of identifying excellence in sporting operations.
Through collaboration and knowledge transfer, David’s career has seen him work with a host of major organisations from across the world of sport, from Bundesliga behemoths Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen to domestic institutions like British Cycling, England Rugby and the Football Association.
With ample advice to share, the Davies Sport duo are aiming to offer their own unique look inside professional sports to UK university and college students, as well as Year 11 pupils studying Physical Education at GCSE level.
